For many of us with a chronic illness – whether it is fibromyalgia or something else – it can feel as if our power to act or choose has taken a near fatal blow. While it’s true that our illness has a huge impact on our lives and even affects many of the choices we make, there are still many choices that our up to us. Of course we didn’t choose to have fibromyalgia (who would?!), but how we approach this significant challenge is still largely up to us.

If you’ve ever flown on an airplane you know about the short safety demonstration flight attendants give right before take off. During part of the demonstration – they advise that in the event of a loss of cabin pressure an oxygen mask will fall from the ceiling. They emphasis that should this occur, you need to put your own mask on first before trying to help those around you. The reason for this is that you have to take care of yourself first – otherwise you might pass out from lack of oxygen.

This is a good analogy for life with chronic pain. We’ve been dealt a bad hand and the oxygen masks are deployed – but even so we often forget to take care of ourselves first. Our lives are busy – whether we children to take care of, a spouse or significant other to worry about or friendships to maintain – we often put other people or other things before our own health.
